400 Million Dollar Emerald Mystery

45 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

A single emerald boulder pulled from a mine in Bahia, Brazil, in 2001 becomes the subject of an eight-way ownership battle and a price tag of $400 million. The film tracks the stone's route through improbable custody: an abandoned petrol station in San Jose, a vault in New Orleans that went underwater during Hurricane Katrina, a car park in São Paulo, and at one point a listing on eBay. Along the way it gets pledged as collateral in a diamond deal and claimed by miners, dealers, investors, and at least one self-declared owner, each with paperwork and a story. Interviews and case documents lay out how a single object can generate parallel legal claims spanning two countries and more than a decade of litigation, with courts still working out who actually holds title. The emerald itself sits at the center throughout, more argument than artifact, its value both the reason everyone wants it and the reason nobody can keep it.
