John Nash arrives at Princeton in 1948 convinced he will produce an original idea or fail trying, and by 21 he has written the game theory paper that will eventually win him a Nobel Prize. This film traces what happens after, when schizophrenia takes hold in his thirties and unravels the career built on that early brilliance: delusions, hospitalizations, and years wandering the Princeton campus as a ghostly, murmuring presence students nicknamed the Phantom. Interviews with his ex-wife Alicia, who took him back in and cared for him through the worst of it, and with colleagues and doctors who watched a mind built for rigorous proof turn against itself, carry the story alongside archival photographs and campus footage. The film does not treat the illness as a metaphor for genius; it stays with the specifics, the voices Nash heard, the papers he stopped writing, the slow and partial recovery late in life that preceded the 1994 Nobel Prize. It ends less with triumph than with the strangeness of a mind that broke and partly mended.
