Nerdfighters are a self-described online community built around the video blogs of authors John and Hank Green, and this film sets out to explain who they are and what they actually do. Hannah Lindgren made it as her senior honors thesis, spending eleven months collecting convention footage shot by two videographers alongside crowd-sourced interviews and clips submitted by dozens of Nerdfighters themselves. The result is closer to a scrapbook assembled by the community than a film made about it from the outside, tracking the group's origins and its charitable arm, The Fund to Decrease Worldsuck, which gives the film its title. Members explain in their own words what drew them in and what projects they organize, from convention meetups to fundraising campaigns aimed at concrete problems rather than abstract goodwill. The footage is plainly amateur, gathered from wherever fans happened to be filming, and the picture quality was further flattened to standard definition on upload, but that unpolished assembly is part of what the film is documenting: a movement that built itself out of homemade video in the first place.
