Around the World in 80 Faiths

Embark on an enlightening journey with Church of England vicar, Peter Owen-Jones, as he sets out to explore different faiths around the world at the beginning of the 21st century. With a year’s sabbatical and a BBC crew by his side, Owen-Jones delves into the heart of diverse cultures, uncovering the unique spiritual practices that shape the daily lives of individuals from all corners of the globe.

The expedition begins in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, Japan, where Owen-Jones immerses himself in the ancient tradition of Shintoism. He observes the rituals and customs of this indigenous religion, gaining insight into the deep reverence for nature and ancestor worship that is ingrained in the culture.

Next, Owen-Jones travels to the remote Himalayan region of Ladakh, India, where he discovers the unique blend of Buddhism, Bon, and Islam that forms the spiritual landscape of this isolated area. He joins local monks in their morning prayers and visits a mosque where he witnesses the blending of religious practices in this diverse community.

The journey continues to the ancient city of Jerusalem, where Owen-Jones explores the complex intersection of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. He visits the Western Wall, the holiest site in Judaism, and meets with a Christian monk at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. He also joins a Muslim family for Friday prayers at the Dome of the Rock, gaining an understanding of the deep-seated religious tensions that exist in this holy city.

As the expedition progresses, Owen-Jones visits a variety of other locations and religions, such as the ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the voodoo practices of Haiti, and the sacred rituals of the indigenous people of Australia. Through each of these experiences, he gains a deeper understanding of the role that faith plays in shaping the lives of individuals and communities around the world.

By the end of the journey, Owen-Jones returns home with a newfound appreciation for the diversity of human spirituality. He comes to realize that despite the many differences that exist between religions, there are also many universal themes that bind us all together.
