Centuries of myth and colonial propaganda have buried much of what the Aztec Empire actually was, and this film sets out to separate the two. It draws on archaeological excavation, artifacts, and the accounts left by Spanish chroniclers to reconstruct daily life in Tenochtitlan, from its causeways and canals to its markets and temples. Ritual human sacrifice gets sustained attention, treated not as a lurid curiosity but as a practice embedded in Aztec cosmology, agriculture, and political control, with archaeologists explaining what skeletal remains and temple sites reveal about how and why it was carried out. The film also credits the empire's engineering and scientific achievements: irrigation systems, a working calendar, and a complex urban infrastructure built without wheeled transport or draft animals. Spanish conquest accounts are weighed against physical evidence rather than accepted at face value, since much of what is commonly believed about the Aztecs comes from their conquerors. The result is a portrait that holds brutality and sophistication together rather than choosing one.
