The Moon exploration timeline runs from the 1959 Soviet-American space race through Apollo 17's final crewed landing in December 1972, then jumps to today's unmanned orbiters, which have found water ice and mineral deposits of iron, aluminum, gold, and platinum. Tim Allen narrates, and the film is built almost entirely from motion graphics recreating lunar terrain and missions rather than archival footage. Its real subject is the Google Lunar XPRIZE, a $30 million prize designed to push private teams, not governments, into landing robotic spacecraft on the Moon; entrants must be at least 90% privately held, and many run on volunteer labor. Representatives from several of the competing teams appear on camera to explain their approaches, from surface rovers to Penn State's proposed spacecraft, which would hover over the Moon to collect data and fly straight back to Earth without landing. The film treats this crowded, low-budget competition as a genuine successor to the old two-nation space race, betting that commercial ambition can restart lunar exploration after a four-decade gap.
