
Black Holes and the High Energy Universe
Black holes, quasars, and supernovas make up some of the most violent events in the universe, and this film tracks the space telescopes built to study them. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, launched in 2008, scans the sky for gamma-ray bursts and black hole signatures, phenomena that flare somewhere in the sky roughly once a day. The Swift mission gathers detailed data on individual bursts as they happen, while Chandra records high-energy supernovas and quasars with X-ray instruments, and NuSTAR adds its own X-ray survey in search of black holes and cosmic rays. Hubble gets the longest treatment: footage and data from the telescope trace galaxies through their evolutionary stages, help map the universe's age, and identify M87, among the largest galaxies known. Narration stays plain and explanatory, walking through what each mission is built to detect and why gamma rays, X-rays, and visible light each reveal a different piece of the same violent picture. The film grew out of a NASA panel called Our Violent Universe, held at the National Air and Space Museum.
