Lelung Rinpoche is one of Tibetan Buddhism's three principal reincarnations, and for seven years he has run his teaching centre out of a garden shed in North London. The film follows him as he leaves that shed to track down the lost teachings of his predecessor, the previous Lelung, before the people who hold them die and the knowledge disappears. The search takes him to India, Mongolia, and China, retracing a lineage scattered by exile and decades of political upheaval. Along the way he meets senior Tibetan Buddhist teachers and sits down with the Tibetan Prime Minister in exile, conversations that double as a picture of a faith trying to hold itself together outside its homeland. The film sets these formal encounters against the ordinary details of his London life, a reincarnated lama running a teaching centre from a shed, and lets that contrast carry the story rather than narrating it. It closes with the practical stakes still open: whether the teachings can be recovered at all before their last holders are gone.
