Alexandra Pelosi drives to all fifty states to film the same ceremony over and over: immigrants raising their right hand and becoming U.S. citizens. She turns her camera on courtrooms, community centers, and convention halls where judges administer the oath, and on the new citizens themselves, who talk about where they came from and what citizenship means to them now that they have it. The film has no narrator laying out a thesis; it lets the ceremonies and the faces do that work, state after state, accent after accent, until the repetition itself becomes the argument for how many different paths lead to the same room. Pelosi shot it as a road trip, so the geography shows too, from big-city federal buildings to small-town halls, before the film premiered on HBO on July 4th. It stays close to the individual moment rather than the policy debate around it.
