Energy links every scale of the universe, from a hurricane's rainfall to a quasar's output, and this film climbs that ladder one power of ten at a time. It starts small: humans generate about two and a half trillion watts of electricity, dwarfed by the 44 trillion watts of radioactive decay inside Earth's core and the 600 trillion watts a hurricane releases at peak strength. The Soviet Union's AN602, detonated in 1961 and known as the Tsar Bomba, produced 5.3 yottawatts for a fraction of a second, a figure the film uses as its unit for measuring everything larger. From there it moves to Nikolai Kardashev's scale for civilizations, the sun's steady 375 yottawatts, the supernova potential of R136a1 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and finally the combined light of the Milky Way's two hundred billion stars. Quasars top the scale, a thousand times brighter than any galaxy, and the film uses Einstein's warped space-time to explain the gravity driving them. Narration keeps the math concrete at every step up.
