
Custom Universe: Fine Tuned for Us?
Physicists have long noticed that a handful of numbers in nature, the strength of gravity, the mass of the electron, the rate of cosmic expansion, sit in a narrow range that allows stars, chemistry, and life to exist at all. Nudge any of them and the universe collapses, disperses, or never forms atoms heavier than hydrogen. This episode of the Australian science series Catalyst asks physicists and cosmologists, including mathematical physicist Brian Greene, what that coincidence might mean. One answer on offer is design; another is the multiverse, the idea that countless universes exist with different physical constants and we simply inhabit one where the numbers happen to work. The film ties this to a real piece of evidence, a telescope detection interpreted as support for gravitational waves predicted by Einstein, and considers what it would mean for the multiverse idea if confirmed.
