Roman Dacia gets a second look in this film, which argues that the standard story of Romanians descending from Roman colonists does not hold up under closer inspection. The Roman occupation of Dacia lasted roughly 150 years, far shorter than the centuries usually assumed necessary for full Romanization, and the film argues the soldiers and settlers who did arrive came from across the empire rather than from Rome itself, making the ethnic picture far more mixed than the traditional account allows. Its strongest evidence is genetic: a paleogenetics study conducted in Hamburg comparing Romanian and Italian populations finds a weaker connection between the two than the Roman-descent narrative predicts. The film lays out historical sources alongside this genetic data and asks viewers to weigh whether the case for continuity actually survives the evidence. It positions itself as a challenge to a national origin story taught as settled fact, treating Romanian ethnogenesis as an open historical question rather than a closed one.
