Charles Darwin spends twenty years sitting on the idea that will become On the Origin of Species, and this film follows that delay rather than the theory itself. Drawing on his private notebooks and correspondence, it tracks the gap between his 1830s observations, sharpened on the Beagle voyage and in his English garden, and the 1859 publication that finally forced his hand. The film uses natural history footage and period imagery to recreate what Darwin was actually looking at when the pieces started fitting together: finches, barnacles, pigeon breeding, the slow accumulation of evidence he kept largely to himself. It does not skip the cost of that secrecy. Family tragedy, chronic illness, and long stretches of self-doubt run through the correspondence alongside the science, including his hesitation over how the idea would land given his wife's religious convictions.
