Stuxnet was the first computer virus known to destroy physical equipment, and the film opens with the two researchers who first uncovered it, tracing how they pulled apart its code and realized it had been built to sabotage industrial machinery rather than steal data. From there the film turns to the people who break into systems for a living rather than by accident: a white-hat hacker demonstrates, on camera, how to crack open a stand-alone cash machine, exposing security flaws banks would rather customers never think about. Interviews with security researchers and company staff cover the practice of "ultra-paranoid computing," where firms hire hackers to attack their own networks before criminals do, treating every system as broken until proven otherwise. The film moves between these case studies rather than building a single narrative, using each one to show a different layer of the fight, from nation-state malware down to a single ATM on a street corner, and what it costs to defend against attackers who only need one way in.
