Conor Cunningham, a theologian and philosopher who is also a committed defender of evolutionary theory, sets out to test a widely held claim: that Darwin's science broke religious faith. He argues the idea took hold partly on the strength of Richard Dawkins' bestseller The God Delusion, and that both fundamentalist believers and fundamentalist atheists have hijacked the actual history. In the Middle East he traces a Christian tradition, dating back to the early church, of warning against reading the Genesis creation story literally. In Britain he shows that Darwin's theory was met with real acceptance by the Anglican and Catholic hierarchies of his own time, not blanket condemnation. Cunningham locates the real rupture in twentieth-century America, where creationists manufactured the Darwin-versus-God conflict for reasons he says were political and moral rather than scientific or theological. The film puts him face to face with leading evolutionary biologists, geneticists, and philosophers to press the question directly: does modern evolutionary science actually settle the case against God, or just look like it does?
