Elvis Presley dies on August 16, 1977, at Graceland, and this film reconstructs the day before, drawing on interviews with the men who were actually in the house. Sonny West, Billy Smith, Joe Esposito, Jerry Schilling, Marty Lacker and Lamar Fike, the inner circle known as the Memphis Mafia, describe a man exhausted by a second grueling tour that year and increasingly isolated by his own fame. His girlfriend Ginger Alden, only 21, is shown resisting the demands he had once forced on Priscilla and a string of earlier girlfriends, and his security chief talks bluntly about screening the women who surrounded him. The film mixes this account with rare footage: home movies shot by Eddie Fadal in the 1950s and audience recordings of Elvis performing in the 1970s, along with fragments of Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes, Viva Las Vegas and That's Alright Mama. Duncan Wells narrates a story that starts at Sun Studios in Memphis, where rock and roll began, and ends in the hours before his death.
