Euromania: Uncovering The European Union
The European Union is Peter Vlemmix's subject: what it actually does, who profits from it, and whether the promise of jobs and democracy matches the reality on the ground. Vlemmix, the filmmaker behind the 2012 film Panopticon, travels through several European countries putting those questions to the people living with the EU's consequences, from workers to officials caught up in what the film calls the most ambitious political project of modern times. The film treats the EU less as a settled institution than as an open argument, weighing the case for it as a democratic project against the case for it as a business arrangement serving narrower interests. It premiered at De Balie in Amsterdam before screening at festivals in multiple countries. There is no narrator explaining the EU from above; the film instead follows Vlemmix as he asks the question directly, letting the people he meets across the continent supply the competing answers.
