Facing Goliath
Ray Taylor is middle-aged, overweight, and losing what remains of his eyesight when natural bodybuilder Sebastian MacLean challenges him to a twelve-week physique transformation. The film follows both men as they train for competitive bodybuilding, Ray to prove he can still build a body he chose rather than watch his sight fade, MacLean to test his own methods on the national stage. Weigh-ins, gym sessions, and posing routines carry most of the film, along with interviews where each man explains what he is actually trying to prove and to whom. What starts as MacLean's story shifts as Ray's progress outpaces expectations, and by competition day the film has largely become his. Ray Taylor died in early 2023, and the film now stands as a record of the transformation that made him known internationally as an example for people facing disability. MacLean went on to work in film, television, and publishing; the training footage here is where that career and Ray's public recognition both begin.
