Agafia Lykov lives alone in Siberia's Sayan Mountains, 160 miles from the nearest other sign of civilization, the last survivor of a family that fled there in 1936. Her parents were Russian Old Believers escaping religious persecution, and they raised their children in the taiga with no contact with the outside world for decades, a story that became famous only after Soviet geologists spotted their cabin from the air in 1978. Agafia was born into that isolation in 1944 and has stayed even after her parents and siblings died one by one, farming potatoes, keeping goats, and living through winters that regularly drop far below freezing. A VICE crew travels out to her homestead and films her daily routine, her prayers, and her account of what happened to the rest of her family. The crew also presses on the question hanging over her later years: supply visits, satellite phones, and curious visitors are creeping toward a life that was built specifically to avoid all of it, and Agafia has to decide how much of that contact she can accept without losing what she came there to protect.
