During El Salvador's civil war, soldiers took children from rural families and routed them into adoption networks that placed them with parents across the United States and Europe, some of whom had no idea the child arriving on a plane had been taken rather than orphaned. The film follows several of these adoptees back to Central America as adults, searching orphanage records, army rosters, and village memories for the families they were separated from decades earlier. Luis Alonso becomes the central case: raised abroad, he eventually traces his way back to his biological relatives and is reunited with them after 21 years apart. The film sits with what that reunion actually looks like, the years lost, the language barrier, the strangeness of meeting parents and siblings as a grown stranger, rather than treating it as a tidy happy ending.
