Ray Kemble, a former gas industry truck driver, runs his well for Stone's camera until the water turns dark and the smell becomes unmistakable. Fisherman Raymond Mayerzack points to a lake fish die-off he traces to an overturned truck carrying fracking fluid, and several families describe years of hauling bottled water after methane and shale gas fouled their wells, despite state regulators insisting the water is safe. Doug McLinko, Bradford County Commissioner, makes the case for fracking as a jobs engine and a step toward energy independence, while farmers who leased their land say the promised payoffs never arrived. The film sets these accounts side by side without softening the contradiction: an industry sold as a lifeline to rural economies, and a string of residents left with undrinkable water and no one willing to take responsibility for it.
