A retired police officer patrols the cliffs at a well-known stretch of Japan's Sea of Japan coastline, a tourist site whose sheer drops have also made it a destination for people planning to end their lives. He walks the same paths daily, watching for anyone standing too long near the edge, and approaches them, talks to them, and sometimes simply sits with them until the moment passes. Over the years he has intervened in more than 500 such encounters, keeping informal track of the people he has stopped and, where he can, staying in touch afterward. The film follows him on these patrols and lets him describe what the work has cost him: the ones he reached in time, the ones he did not, and why he keeps returning to the cliff edge anyway. There is no narrator standing between him and the camera, just an old man doing a self-appointed job that has no salary, no shift end, and no official recognition, in a country with one of the higher suicide rates among wealthy nations.
