Rodrigo Dorfman was six years old when his father, the Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman, was forced into exile after Pinochet's coup, and the family scattered across continents. Thirty-five years later, Rodrigo turns the camera on four women whose lives echo that displacement: a Taiwanese pianist still working through nightmares rooted in her past, an Afro-Caribbean Whirling Dervish making a pilgrimage to Turkey, a Latina artist grieving the destruction of her home community, and a young American woman recovering from what the film calls spiritual abuse. Their stories span four continents and, taken together, roughly a century of personal history, moving between interviews, performance, and footage of the pilgrimage and communities involved. Dorfman uses his own exile as the thread connecting them, treating identity less as something fixed than as something rebuilt after loss, over and over, in different languages and different countries. The film played the Full Frame Film Festival and Chile's SANFIC before wider release.
