Hand-painted signage still marks storefronts and pub facades across Dublin, even as vinyl printing and digital design have made the trade nearly obsolete. This film follows the Gentlemen of Letters, a small group of sign painters who work the old way, sketching layouts by hand before laying down lettering stroke by stroke with a brush. Interviews with the painters sit alongside footage of them at work, mixing paint, spacing letters, and finishing a sign from blank board to lettered storefront. The film also looks at some of Dublin's existing hand-painted signs still in use around the city, using them to show what the craft looked like before machines took over most of the work. Rather than treating the trade as already gone, the film follows people still doing it for a living, and asks what happens to a visual style built entirely on a steady hand once that hand is no longer needed.
