Two hundred years of medical progress, told through three stories: the long fight against cancer, the emergence and treatment of HIV/AIDS, and the transformation of surgery from a last resort into a routine procedure. The film was produced alongside the New England Journal of Medicine's 2012 bicentennial, and it uses that publication's history as a throughline for tracking how clinicians and researchers have translated laboratory findings into treatments that actually reach patients. Interviews with doctors and scientists sit alongside patients and family members describing what these advances meant in practice, from an HIV diagnosis that once carried a death sentence to surgical techniques that turned major operations survivable. Rather than treating each field in isolation, the film keeps returning to the same mechanism: how a journal, a network of researchers, and decades of incremental publication turn scattered discoveries into standard practice. It closes by weighing what remains unresolved in each of the three fields, treating the past two centuries as a starting point rather than a finished story.
