Greed runs through nine chapters that track a single question: why can't people ever get enough? American social psychologist Sheldon Solomon anchors the film's argument, tracing consumerism back to terror management theory, the idea that accumulating possessions is a way of denying mortality, of feeling like we might live forever if we just own enough. The film moves from that psychological root (Anxiety, Ego) through its social machinery (Happiness Machine, Seizure, Babel) to its consequences (Collapse), interviewing people on both sides of the transaction, executives and consumers, winners and the discarded, about a planet now supporting more than seven billion people under what the film calls the Greed Program.
