Hannibal takes command of Carthage's army after his father's death and launches the Second Punic War with a single goal: breaking Rome before Rome can break Carthage. The film follows his march across the Alps, an operation that costs him men, elephants, and supplies before he even reaches Italian soil, and then the string of battlefield victories that follow, culminating in a single day of fighting that leaves 70,000 Roman soldiers dead. Rome's generals respond by refusing to fight him directly, wearing down his army through attrition instead of confronting him in the open field the way his earlier opponents had. Cut off from reinforcements and unable to force a final decisive battle, Hannibal eventually abandons the Italian campaign and sails back to Carthage. The film treats him plainly as both general and threat, tracking how a single commander's tactics could humiliate an empire for over a decade without ever taking its capital.
