Laura Milcawich and Steve Aube, two Canadians on their honeymoon, hike into the mountains above Vilcabamba, Ecuador, a region locals call the Valley of Longevity for its unusually old residents. Alone on the trail, they are approached by three armed men who pull machetes, take Laura hostage, and demand three thousand dollars for her release. The film reconstructs what follows through interviews with the couple and reenactments of the standoff: Steve running barefoot down the mountain to find cash and get back before the deadline runs out, and Laura held at the campsite waiting to learn whether he makes it.
