High Drama: Honeymoon Hostage Situation
Laura Milcawich and Steve Aube, two Canadians on their honeymoon, hike into the mountains above Vilcabamba, Ecuador, a region locals call the Valley of Longevity for its unusually old residents. Alone on the trail, they are approached by three armed men who pull machetes, take Laura hostage, and demand three thousand dollars for her release. The film reconstructs what follows through interviews with the couple and reenactments of the standoff: Steve running barefoot down the mountain to find cash and get back before the deadline runs out, and Laura held at the campsite waiting to learn whether he makes it. Produced for the Canadian newsmagazine series 16x9, the episode sticks to the couple's own account of the negotiation and the scramble to raise the ransom in an unfamiliar country with no easy way to call for help. It ends with the outcome of that bargain rather than a broader look at crime in the region, keeping its focus on one specific ordeal and how two people got through it.
