Albert Hofmann synthesizes LSD in a Swiss lab in 1938 and spends the rest of his life trying to understand what he made. The film builds its case almost entirely from interviews with the scientists who studied the drug before it became illegal, several of whom, including Ram Dass, took it themselves as part of their research and speak about it as something that reshaped their thinking. It traces how early psychiatric work treating anxiety and alcoholism with LSD gave way to Timothy Leary's public campaign to make the drug a mass experience, how the Army's own experiments with LSD as a potential weapon fed government unease, and how both threads combined to shut down legitimate research in the United States by the late 1960s. The film argues that fear and politics buried a promising line of medical inquiry, and it lets the researchers who lived through that shutdown make the case directly to camera. Their testimony is personal rather than neutral, since none of them are outside observers of the drug they are describing.
