
How to Explore the Universe
Interstellar travel looks impossible under the physics that put astronauts on the Moon, so Michio Kaku goes looking for loopholes. He tours Brookhaven National Laboratory's particle accelerator, where protons are pushed to near light speed, to show how far conventional propulsion can be pushed and where it runs out. The film's centerpiece is Miguel Alcubierre's warp drive equation, which he says was inspired directly by Star Trek: a solution within Einstein's relativity that would let a ship reach a destination faster than light without technically breaking the speed limit, by warping space itself rather than moving through it. Kaku demonstrates negative energy, the strange ingredient the equation requires, and visits Harvard physicist Federico Capasso, whose lab work on the Casimir effect is treated as a first real foothold on producing it. The tone stays speculative rather than settled: every idea here is presented as theoretically permitted, not engineered, and the film is honest about the gap between an equation that works on paper and a spacecraft that could use it.
