A protest rally in King, a small town where thousands of residents wave Christian flags and cheer a speaker urging non-Christians to move elsewhere, pushes filmmaker Scott Burdick to grab a camera and start asking questions. The spark is a returning Afghanistan veteran who threatens to sue the town unless a Christian flag comes down from the public Veteran's Memorial, a dispute that opens into eighteen months of interviews with half a dozen local religious groups. Residents tell Burdick that separation of church and state is a myth and that the Founders meant America to be a Christian nation, citing the historian David Barton by name. One woman, confronted with the Bible's own passages on slavery, decides on camera that homosexuality is the greater sin. Others, asked to imagine themselves as Joshua or Abraham receiving a divine order to kill, say they would obey. Burdick adds no narration, letting each interview stand on its own so the contradictions surface without commentary. Shot alone on a handheld camera, the film stays a plain record of what people in one American town actually believe, and why.
