Saudi Arabia keeps its royal family and its politics largely out of view, and filmmaker Lionel Mill gets rare access to one member of it, Prince Saud bin Abdul Mohsen, for a look at how the kingdom runs and how it is changing. Interviews inside the palace trace tensions among the royals themselves, wealth and power concentrated in one family that also has to manage a country where oil money and strict religious tradition pull in different directions. Outside the palace, the film turns to ordinary Saudis, including young women speaking about the driving ban and the broader restrictions on their daily lives, set against a government beginning to loosen some of those rules. The contrast the film keeps returning to is generational: elders defending customs that have held for decades, and a younger population pushing, carefully, for more room to live differently. There is no narrator standing outside the story here, just the prince, the palace, and the people, left to describe a country most outsiders only see in headlines.
