Greek, the oldest living language, has existed for 3400 years and is part of the Indo-European language family. Spoken by more than 13 million people worldwide, Greek is the official language of Greece, Cyprus, and the European Union, and a minority language in Albania, Armenia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Ukraine. The Greek alphabet has 24 uppercase and lowercase letters. Greek is one of the most important and influential languages, making a huge impact on science (Hippocrates), math (Euclid), philosophy (Socrates & Plato), literature (Homer), history (Alexander the Great), and religion (as the language of the New Testament). Greek, of course, went through many transformations over the centuries, and Modern Greek came into being after the fall of the Byzantine Empire in the 15th century.
Modern Greek is a fantastic language to learn, as it offers a unique insight into and access to the beauty, history, culture, and people of Greece. Since over a quarter of English words are of Greek origin, students may discover that Greek can even feel quite familiar.
