Mark Cuban: How I Became a Billionaire
Mark Cuban grows up in Pittsburgh selling trash bags and newspapers door to door, then carries that hustle to Indiana University, where he opens a bar called Motley's that eventually fails. Bloomberg's Game Changers profile tracks what comes after: Cuban moves to Dallas, founds the computer services company MicroSolutions during the early PC boom, and sells it for enough money to retire in his early thirties. Retirement does not take. In 1995 he starts an internet audio venture that becomes broadcast.com, streaming sports and events online just as the dot-com boom hits, and the sale of that company is what actually makes him a billionaire. The film follows the money into his purchase of the Dallas Mavericks and his later television ventures, using archival footage and interviews with people who worked alongside him to reconstruct the timeline. Cuban himself declined to take part, so the portrait is assembled entirely from outside accounts of a man who treats business, in his own stated view, as a nonstop, no-days-off proposition.
