Journalist Peter Taylor sets out to measure the gap between the spy of popular fiction, the gadget-wielding figure of James Bond or Jason Bourne, and the people who actually work inside intelligence agencies. He interviews current and former officers about recruitment, tradecraft, and the daily risks of the job, paired with behind-the-scenes footage of the organizations they work for. The film's throughline is how little of the job resembles a chase scene: it is patience, paperwork, and psychological pressure more often than confrontation. Taylor also asks how agencies are adapting to new technology and a changed political landscape, from surveillance tools to shifting targets since the Cold War. The people on camera talk about motivation as much as method, why someone chooses a career built on secrecy and what it costs them. The result is a corrective to the Hollywood version, built on testimony rather than reenactment.
