Seven structures built to outdo nature and each other anchor this Travel Channel survey of modern engineering: the Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883 as the first steel-wire suspension bridge in the United States; the Eiffel Tower, erected in 1889 over the objections of Paris's own artists; and the Petronas Towers, the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004. The film crosses the Panama Canal's lock system, which lifts ships 26 meters into the artificial Gatun Lake to cut through the isthmus, and goes underground through the Channel Tunnel, whose 37.9-kilometer undersea run between Folkestone and Coquelles is still the longest of any tunnel on Earth. Concorde gets airborne footage from its 27 years of supersonic passenger service, and Hoover Dam closes the film with the concrete arch built across the Colorado River during the Great Depression. Each segment treats its structure as both engineering problem and deliberate work of design.
