Osama bin Laden grew up as one of roughly fifty children in a construction billionaire's household in Saudi Arabia, a childhood of private schools, chauffeured cars, and family vacations in Europe. This film, produced for the CBC's The Passionate Eye, gathers his relatives and in-laws on camera to explain how that privileged upbringing gave way to religious extremism and, eventually, to al-Qaeda. Family members describe the arguments over his politics, the moment relatives began cutting ties, and the strain his radicalization put on wives, children, and siblings who had nothing to do with his cause. The film moves through the bin Laden construction empire's wealth and connections before tracing the personal rift that opened as Osama's beliefs hardened, using firsthand testimony rather than reenactment to fill in a life usually told only through news footage and government files. It stays close to the domestic side of the story, treating him first as a son and husband and only then as the figure behind the headlines.
