
NASA Space Shuttle: Best of Launches
Three Space Shuttle launches, filmed in slow motion by NASA engineers at the Glenn Research Center and cut together with music instead of narration. The footage isolates mechanical moments usually lost in the noise of liftoff: the SRB hold-down bolts firing to release the stack from the pad, the T-0 umbilicals retracting from the orbiter and their access doors snapping shut, and the sound suppression system dumping water from a 300,000-gallon tank through six rainbird nozzles at a peak rate of 900,000 gallons per minute to keep noise in the payload bay under 145 decibels. The clearest sequence catches the "Shuttle Twang," the vehicle physically bending toward the launch tower for a few seconds after the three main engines ignite at T-minus-8, because their nozzles fire at an angle. That same angle explains why the shuttle does not rise straight up at liftoff but visibly walks sideways before straightening into its ascent. There is no narration to explain any of it beyond what the slow-motion camera already shows.
