Audrey Mestre grew up wearing a back brace for scoliosis and found relief in the water, eventually becoming one of the world's top free divers under the discipline called "No Limits," where a diver rides a weighted sled down and an inflatable balloon hauls them back up. The film follows her relationship with Pipin Ferreras, the Cuban-American diver who trained her and became her husband, and traces how the sport's record culture pushed them both toward ever greater depths. It builds toward the dive off the Dominican Republic in 2002, where Mestre attempted a new depth record and drowned when the lift bag failed to inflate in time. Interviews and archival footage examine the accusations that followed, including claims that safety equipment was left unprepared, and the lawsuit and fallout within the free-diving community afterward. The film uses her story to ask what a sport owes the people risking their lives to advance it, when the person setting the safety standards is also the one most invested in the record being broken.
