São Paulo hosts the first NOVA Contemporary Culture Festival in 2010, and this film follows it as it happens, camera moving through the crowds and installations rather than sitting down for retrospective interviews. Street artists work on walls in real time, performers stage pieces for whoever stops to watch, and the footage cuts between mediums without much narration to organize it, letting the festival's mix of disciplines speak for itself. The film stays close to the artists as they build and finish pieces on a deadline, catching the improvisation and occasional frustration of working in public rather than a studio. There is little context given about the festival's organizers or its place in Brazil's art scene, and no single artist gets sustained attention; the film functions more as a document of one event than an argument about contemporary art. It works best as a record of what a young, international festival of street and performance art looked like in São Paulo at that moment.
