Google has floated balloons over Sri Lanka to blanket the island with free wifi, part of a push by Google and Facebook to keep everyone connected everywhere, all the time. Director Bregtje van der Haak follows the people trying to opt out of that ambition: a growing scene researching how to stay offline in a world of closing digital gaps. The White Spots App maps out zones still untouched by network signals, a Dutch company sells products that shield users from device radiation, and a German spa retreat markets calm isolation as its main offering. Even Amish communities appear, grappling with how much of the new connectivity to let in. Political scientist Paul Frissen, MIT psychologist Sherry Turkle, internet critic Evgeny Morozov, and Pirate Party founder Birgitta Jonsdottir weigh in on what constant connection costs and what, if anything, is worth protecting from it. The film treats offline time less as nostalgia than as a resource getting scarcer by the year.
