Suzan Jennings wakes up one day with weakness in her legs that spreads until she is paralyzed from the neck down, and doctors diagnose Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body's own immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. The film follows Jennings and her family through the diagnosis, the hospital stay, and the slow return of movement, using interviews with her and the people who cared for her to describe what the paralysis felt like and how treatment worked. There is no reenactment or outside medical expert here, just one family's account of a condition most viewers will never have heard of before it happened to them. The film stays close to Jennings's own case rather than surveying the syndrome broadly, tracking her from total paralysis back toward recovery.
