Two waves of early modern humans push into territory already occupied by other human species, and this two-part series reenacts both encounters using actors, prosthetics, and location filming rather than narration alone. The first group crosses the Thar Desert in South Asia, a stretch of sand and heat that forces a confrontation with Homo erectus bands already living along its margins and controlling access to water. The second group moves into Ice Age Europe and runs into Neanderthals, a species built for cold, with heavier bones and bigger chests, competing for the same caves and game. Each episode follows a single family group making the crossing, staging the kind of contact, negotiation, and violence the fossil and genetic record only hints at. The series treats these meetings as tests of who survives contact with a rival species, and the science segments explain what skeletons, tools, and DNA can and cannot tell us about how it actually went.
