Each year, tourism boards estimate, tens of thousands of women from Britain, the United States, and Canada travel to Jamaica's resort towns looking for something the brochures do not advertise: short-term romance with local men, many of them dreadlocked and marketed to tourists as authentic Rastafarians whether they practice the faith or not. The film puts a name on that arrangement, the local slang term "rent a rasta," and follows the economy built around it, from beach hustlers to guesthouses that quietly cater to the trade. Interviews with the men describe sex work as one of the few paths out of poverty available to them, while the women who come back season after season talk about what they are actually buying, attention, affection, a fantasy of the Caribbean that has little to do with the island's economics. Activists and researchers weigh in on the power imbalance underneath the transaction, and archival tourism footage sits next to footage shot on the ground in Jamaica, tracking a trade that runs almost entirely outside the law.
