The Great Sphinx sits on the Giza Plateau in Egypt, a limestone body as long as a football field topped by a head roughly as tall as the White House. It has stood for more than 45 centuries, and for most of that time its builders, its purpose, and even its original shape have been guesses rather than facts. The film follows the research behind one specific claim: that the monument now standing was not built as a single statue but grew over centuries, starting as a lion-bodied figure carved directly from the plateau's bedrock and only later given its human head and the temple complex around it. Geological readings of erosion patterns, comparisons with other Old Kingdom carvings, and surveys of the surrounding causeways and temples are laid out as the evidence for that sequence. Older theories about who commissioned the Sphinx and what the half-human, half-lion form was meant to represent get weighed alongside the newer material. The picture that emerges is of a monument built in stages rather than a single act, with each stage still only partly understood.
