ODESSA is the name that surfaces again and again in postwar rumor: a supposed network built by former SS officers to smuggle Nazi war criminals out of Europe and keep the movement alive. This film sends researchers along the routes those fugitives allegedly used through Italy and Austria, checking monasteries, ports, and border crossings for anything that would count as physical evidence the organization actually existed rather than existing only in memoirs and hearsay. It examines the case of a Nazi fugitive whose death was reported and then doubted, weighing whether it was staged to cover an escape to South America. The investigation also turns to the institutions accused of helping, the Catholic Church and the Red Cross, asking what they knew when they issued papers and passage to men fleeing Europe. A recurring question is whether a member of Hitler's inner circle organized and funded the whole operation. The film treats ODESSA as an open case, laying out the claims against what can actually be verified on the ground.
