
Robotics Army - From Fiction to Reality
A robotic muscle the size of a microchip can throw an object fifty times its own weight across five times its own length in sixty milliseconds, and this short segment shows the lab where it was built. Junqiao Wu, lead scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, explains the mechanism on camera: a micro-bimorph dual coil shaped like a V, driven by heat or electric current, that exploits vanadium dioxide's habit of changing physical state when its temperature shifts. Heating the material contracts it along one dimension while it expands along the other two, winding up a torsion spring at a scale no bigger than a computer chip, the same principle behind a catapult shrunk down to microscopic size. The film keeps the Hollywood image of crushing steel robot arms in frame only to dismiss it, since this current version is aimed at prosthetics rather than combat. It runs just long enough to show the muscle and hear Wu describe how it works.
