China makes more than 75 percent of the world's toys, and this film goes inside the factories to hear from the workers making them. On camera, women describe shifts that start at 6 a.m. and run past midnight, sometimes until three or four in the morning during peak production, seven days a week with no break. Overtime pay brings a monthly wage of 700 to 800 yuan, roughly 100 to 110 US dollars. Organizing a trade union is illegal in China and workers who try risk prison, so there is no formal channel to complain about hours, pay, or safety. The film also turns to the buyers, the European and American companies placing these orders, who blame the Chinese suppliers for the conditions while suppliers point to the price pressure those same buyers apply. Interviews are conducted in Mandarin with subtitles, narration in English. The film does not resolve who is responsible, leaving the question open: the retailer setting the price, the factory setting the shift, or the shopper who never asks how the toy got so cheap.
