In 1998, German engineer Tilman Walterfang located a ninth-century shipwreck off Indonesia's Belitung Island, its hold still packed with gold, silver, and ceramic cargo after more than a thousand years underwater. The find, eventually totaling around 60,000 artifacts, becomes the first hard evidence for a Maritime Silk Route linking Tang China to the Middle East, a route long argued over by historians without a wreck to prove it. Maritime archaeologists and ceramic specialists examine the bowls, spice jars, and precious metalwork pulled from the site, reading trade routes and manufacturing centers out of glaze patterns and cargo manifests. Reenactments put viewers on the deck of a wooden dhow crossing open ocean, the kind of voyage that produced the Sinbad legends and killed sailors often enough that a single surviving cargo like this one is rare. The film follows the reconstruction of the ship's route and the Tang-era workshops that supplied it, using one wreck to rebuild a trade network that connected two ends of the ancient world.
