The Serengeti spans 30,000 square kilometers of savanna shared by Tanzania and Kenya, and this film follows biologist and wildlife filmmaker Reinhard Radke as he spends two years there shooting the first German cinema production about the region in fifty years. Radke has visited the Serengeti for three decades, first on field trips, then for television, now for this feature, and the camera watches him work rather than just showing him the results. A 4x4 has been rebuilt into a rolling camera platform, roof reinforced into a filming balcony, storage packed for unplanned nights in the bush when the drive back to base camp is too far. A spotter rides along whose whole job is reading animal behavior well enough to find the film's subjects before they move on. Cameras capable of up to 2,000 frames per second catch a hunt among the wildebeest herds in slow motion. The shoot is not smooth: overnight rain turns the tracks to mud and strands the vehicle, and getting free again takes help from elsewhere in the reserve.
